An intimate tented camp in a shady acacia forest on the rim of Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater, at Lemala you are immersed in nature for an authentic luxury safari experience. Some of the most prolific Big Five wildlife viewing in Africa is to be found on the lush crater floor and the camp’s enviable position inside the gate allows for easy access and early morning safari drives without the crowds. The seasonal camp closes in April and May and is a real bush camp with a light footprint and no permanent structures, but delivers all the comforts with friendly efficiency.
Eight spacious luxury tents are set among the acacia trees, with solid wood floors, huge, very comfortable beds and even sofas and armchairs. The high elevation makes for chilly nights in winter, so there are snug down duvets, warm blankets, hot water bottles at turn down and gas heaters in each tent and there is 24hour solar lighting. The ensuite bathrooms are large with a dressing area, flush toilet and a traditional safari bucket shower, which is filled with hot water any time you wish. The family tent sleeps two adults and three children with the same comfortable furnishings.
Guests gather around the campfire for sundowners to exchange stories of their day before enjoying delicious meals served at the long table in the mess tent with its traditional safari furnishings, chandeliers, comfortable sofas and library corner. Meals are prepared from fresh ingredients every day by the ingenious chef who works miracles with bush oven and campfire for lavish breakfasts, delicious packed lunches filled with treats and really tasty three-course dinners.
As well as the wonderful long game drives, enjoying early morning light on the crater floor and abundant wildlife viewing, there are guided walks with the Masai and a ranger in the forest to view the shyer forest-dwelling creatures, and along the crater rim with spectacular views.
For a taste of the real Africa and a rare chance to experience the Ngorongoro Crater without the crowds, Lemala Ngorongoro Camp offers a great value for money safari with its own rustic charm in wonderful unspoilt surroundings.
