One of the most well-known wildlife sanctuaries on the planet, the Serengeti is Tanzania’s pride and joy. Nearly 15 000km2 (5700 square miles) in area, the giant park is as big as Northern Ireland and sees animals roam freely within its massive borders. Bordered by Kenya’s famous Masai Mara, the Maswa Game Reserve and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, the Serengeti is African savanna at its largest and most majestic.

Particularly famous for the annual wildebeest migration – nicknamed ‘The Greatest Show on Earth” – the Serengeti witnesses the largest mammal migration in the world as some two million wildebeest travel some 800km across the open plains chasing the annual rains and abundance of food. Usually running from April to June (though varying every year depending on rain patterns), the migration attracts scores of predators such as lions, cheetahs and crocodiles, who gorge themselves during this time of plenty.

It is an event unlike any other, and one that every avid safari goer should experience at least once in their lifetime. Outside of the migration, the Serengeti remains one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa. The long rains of April bring much needed life to the plains, and it is during this month that the Serengeti is at it’s most beautiful. Wildflowers, an abundance of game and great light make the Serengeti in April one of the most popular destinations for African wildlife photographers. Territorial game such as antelopes, elephants, leopards, lions and hyena remain throughout the year – particularly in the Seronera area – making it a viable destination all year round.
