A scenic setting where two rivers meet gives Chongwe River Camp endless views of peaceful slow moving water, disturbed only by elephants crossing. On the edge of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park it makes the best of a huge area of unspoilt wilderness and also has access to the Chiawa Partnership Park , a new conservation initiative spearheaded by Chongwe’s owner Chris Liebenberg with local communities. The banks of the River Zambezi are home to a host of wildlife, from elephants and hippos to crocodiles and birdlife, as well as big cats, so every day’s game viewing is different.

Overlooking the river are nine classic tents shaded by thatched canopies for coolness, with an adjoining outdoor bathroom, hot and cold water, shower and flush toilet. King size beds with cotton linens and local textiles are comfortable and understated, the decor blending in perfectly with the natural setting.

Two private suites are set slightly apart each with their own butler, dining areas and private plunge pool. The Albida has two bedrooms, dining room, bar, lounge and fire pit, so that you can be totally self-contained, the honeymoon Cassia suite with one very spacious bedroom is similarly designed for privacy and both have canopied outdoor bathrooms with claw bathtubs as well as rainfall showers..

Game-viewing activities at Chongwe are varied and adapted to each guest’s interests. Long boat cruises viewing birds and elephants, hippos and crocs, game drives to discover lion and leopard, guided walks to learn more about tracking and the smaller creatures of the bush, or canoe trips and tiger-fishing excursions all mean that time flies by far too quickly. Afterwards relax for an afternoon siesta by the swimming pool or watch elephants saunter through camp, grazing as they pass.

A comfortably relaxed atmosphere extends to friendly dinners at the long outdoor table under the stars, sampling ample meals of local and international flavours, and the charm of early morning breakfasts cooked to order over the fire before your game drive, all complemented by friendly helpful staff and guides who go out of their way to make your stay unforgettable.

Dotted along the forested riverbanks, Time + Tide Chongwe Camp is surrounded by wild beauty. Set at the confluence of the Chongwe and Zambezi Rivers against a beautiful mountainous backdrop, the camp has the best views in the Lower Zambezi. Sit outside your tent, listening to playful vervet monkeys scampering in the winterthorn trees overhead. Before you, an elephant wades across the languid river, dwarfed by the mountainous escarpment beyond. The resident hippos bellow their displeasure at this intrusion, breaking the tranquility.
