A serene haven on the banks of the Zambezi, looking out over shallow channels and islands where elephants and hippos bathe, Sausage Tree Camp offers luxurious tented accommodation and abundant game-viewing. Set in the heart of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National park, a scenic 30 minute boat ride from the airstrip, there are lush waterways dotted with water-lilies, idyllic views over the flood plains to distant hills and shady mature mahogany, acacia, and of course sausage trees, around the camp. One of the BBCs 10 Best Luxury destinations the camp is open in the dry season from May to November.
Incredibly spacious Bedouin style tented suites are the essence of bush chic. Furnished with sumptuous fabrics and solid Zambian teak they have gorgeous open-air bathrooms that re-define outside living space. Two even larger honeymoon suites have huge squashy sofas and their own private pools, as does the two bedroom family Kigelia House. Cool polished stone floors, open fronts with sliding doors for those cooler nights and extremely comfortable four-poster beds make it more than a home from home and each suite is allocated a murchinda (personal butler) to look after every need.
Personal service is very much a feature at Sausage Tree. With only 16 guests in total at the camp, your guide tailors your activities to suit you, whether you feel like a canoe safari, tiger-fishing, a night drive, a bush walk or a leisurely sunset cruise. Delightful surprises are thoughtfully arranged, perhaps discovering lunch set up on a shallow sandbank in the middle of the river or a campfire dinner in the bush lit by hurricane lamps after a night drive.
Back at the camp there is a large swimming pool in the shade of the mahogany trees, a wide deck to lounge on looking out over the reed islands and a blazing camp fire to gather around before and after the superb meals of African fusion cuisine.
Prolific game-viewing, of lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and many more, combine with lavish hospitality, attention to detail and inspiring guides to make Sausage Tree Camp a really memorable safari experience.
