Peace and tranquillity on the bank s of the great Zambezi River, Thorntree River Lodge is a wonderful retreat 15 minutes from the bustle of Zambia’s Livingstone and an ideal base to experience all the drama and adventure of the legendary Victoria Falls. Set in a pristine area of the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park, elephants and hippos wander through the grounds and mischievous vervet monkeys entertain with their antics. Enjoy elephant back safaris and walking with lions from the lodge, take a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, get the adrenaline flowing with bungee jumping and white water rafting or just relax by the pool with a G&T.
With only nine beautiful thatched suites the atmosphere is intimate and friendly and each suite is set apart with plenty of privacy. Sit out on the shady private verandah gazing at the sweep of the river and elephants crossing to the small islands, and drift off to sleep at night in the big beds festooned in mosquito netting to the sound of water gently lapping at the river banks and the grunts of hippos. All the suites have ensuite bathrooms with tub and separate shower, and outdoor showers too. A simple and elegant decor includes carved dark wood doors and furniture and light and breezy fabrics for a relaxing ambience.
One of Thorntree’s big attractions is the resident family of elephants who happily wander through the grounds and play in the river, then there are elephant back safaris into the national park observing zebra, giraffe buffalo and other wildlife from this unique perspective. Contribute to lion conservation efforts by walking with young lions as part of their pre-release training in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park or take a helicopter trip over the Victoria Falls. The helpful staff advise on the immense variety of activities in the area and organise everything for you, and the lodge has its own knowledgeable guides
Excellent set meals are served on the deck overlooking the river at breakfast and dinner and in a shady spot on the lawns at lunch. Altogether Thorntree is an oasis of comfort and serenity and an authentic bush experience.
