Stay just outside Etosha National Park, in a traditional bush lodge known for its woodlands setting and warm hospitality. Onguma Etosha Aoba Lodge lies a mere 15-minute drive from Etosha’s eastern gate, and is a peaceful and welcoming base to return to after a thrilling day on safari in one of the most rewarding big game destinations in Southern Africa.
Onguma Etosha has 11 air-conditioned bungalows furnished with comfortable twin beds, a writing desk and a cooler box which you can ask to be stocked with all of your favourite drinks. The en-suite bathroom has a shower with good water pressure, and each bungalow has its own outdoor seating area and plenty of privacy.
There’s even complimentary WiFi in all the rooms so you can connect with friends back home (although the signal is strongest back at the lodge).
For families we’d recommend staying in one of the Bush Suites, which has two rooms with an inter-leading bathroom. And if you’re looking for a romantic escape, pick the perfectly private Honeymoon Bungalow which has a lovely double hammock, and both an outdoor shower and bath – for long soaks under the stars!
Aoba Lodge is set on a private nature reserve, and the main lodge overlooks a small waterhole where dik-dik, duiker and kudu often gather. Allow yourself some time to explore this peaceful reserve – the lodge offers guided walks, sunset nature drives and night drives – but bear in mind that the wildlife viewing here pales in comparison to the dramatic big game and predators sightings you’re almost guaranteed at Etosha.
Choose to drive yourself around Etosha, and if you’re planning on spending the whole day in the park you can ask the staff for a packed lunch. You can also opt for a guided safari: Onguma’s guides are entertaining and knowledgeable, have sharp eyesight, and maintain radio contact with each other thereby increasing you chances of excellent sightings.
On most nights dinner is served under the stars: look forward to good quality food and an excellent selection of wine from the lodge’s well-stocked wine cellar. You can even taste the wines first, then select a bottle that complements your meal.
