Lodge. Set on a dune plateau overlooking the vast desert plains, this small tented camp is one of only five lodges in NamibRand Private Reserve, just south of famous Sossusvlei. Ideal for honeymooners or a romantic retreat, Wolwedans Dunes Camp has nine spacious and luxurious chalets. Each chalet has a private verandah and roll-up canvas walls so there’s a real sense of having the Namib Desert right on your doorstep. On calm evenings leave the sides of your chalet open and snuggle under your down duvet to watch the sun set and the sky become ablaze with stars!
As for daytime activities, Dunes Lodge offers a myriad of ways to explore the desert: go on scenic drives in this surreal and colourful landscape, keeping an eye out for oryx, springbok and black-backed jackal; wake up early and watch the sunrise from a hot air balloon soaring silently over the red Sossusvlei dunes or sleep in and then set off on a late-afternoon drive for sunset drinks.
Then there are the scenic airplane flights, guided nature walks, desert picnics – or simply relaxing on your verandah, camera in hand, taking in the grandeur of your surroundings.
The main lodge, too, has plenty of places to soak up the views with its comfortable lounges, sundowner decks and welcoming swimming pool – perfect for cooling dips on those hot desert days. The dining room has just one long table, and evenings are spent chatting with the other guests over a five-course candlelit dinner paired with excellent local and South African wines.
For all its luxury, Wolwedans Dunes Lodge remains an eco-friendly lodge: their innovative building techniques leave a light environmental footprint, the entire camp is run off solar energy and meals are prepared from fresh produce grown in their own organic gardens.
All of this means that you can relax and enjoy this extraordinary desert setting safe in the knowledge that Wolwedans is truly committed to maintaining the pristine condition of this fragile desert environment.
