More and more destinations in Africa are catering to families, but most safari lodges and camps are not suitable for very small children. For example little children are not allowed on game drives in Big Five reserves for safety reasons as well as the fact that their attention span is shorter. Also many lodges and camps have no fences or are constructed up on wooden decks and have unfenced plunge pools.
With more families travelling together, there is an increase in exclusive-use villas and family suites with a flexible schedule. Child-friendly lodges that welcome little ones offer age-appropriate programmes and activities in nature aimed at keeping the kids entertained and enthralled. Experienced staff take care of children while the adults are out on game drive, and there are baby sitting services while adults are enjoying sundowners and dinner under the Africa stars.

Some lodges insist on a private safari vehicle if you have small children. It’s a good idea to book one even if they don’t! Like this you’ll have more flexility, you’ll be on YOUR kid’s schedule, other guests won’t be disturbed and everyone will be happy!
Taking very young children on safari needs to be carefully planned.
