Northern Mozambique

Everything you associate with the ultimate tropical island holiday – white sands, crystal clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, palm trees, thatched beach bungalows and irresistible seafood- you will find in the Quirimbas Archipelago. A spectacular string of 32 islands stretching 150km along the northern coast of Mozambique, The Quirimbas Archipelago runs all the way to the Rovuma River, which forms the natural border with Tanzania.

The Archipelago is totally unspoilt and undeveloped which makes it a true paradise. The 11 southernmost islands make up the Quirimbas National Park, protecting the outstanding biodiversity of the region. The Quilálea Sanctuary was the first marine protected area (MPA) in Quirimbas and contains areas of global conservation significance.

Ibo Island is one of the gems in the region and is one of the oldest towns in Africa and dates back to the 1500s. It’s stone walled buildings and old forts are a delight to explore, while a bicycle ride through town refreshes the soul as the friendly locals rush to greet you.

With development of the area still in its infancy, this is not the place to come if you’re expecting first-world service and attention to detail. If, however, you’re after solitude, untouched wilderness and the warmth of locals genuinely happy to see you, Northern Mozambique is for you.
