Remote, intimate and set in a glorious location deep in the bush on the banks of the Zambezi, Old Mondoro is the sister camp to award-winning Chiawa both owned and run by the Cumings family in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. The emphasis at Old Mondoro is on an authentic safari experience, staying close to nature in simple but very comfortable accommodation, with exceptional guides and hospitality in a relaxed family atmosphere. A seasonal camp, Old Mondoro is open from April to November and is renowned for its prolific leopard sightings, guided bush walks, its charm and sense of adventure.
The four comfortable rooms are constructed of canvas and natural local materials, open fronted to the view over the river of hippos wallowing and elephants feeding on the shady acacia trees. There are canvas blinds to let down if wanted, but more often you sleep open to the night sounds and snorting of hippos. The king-size beds are draped in mosquito nets and made up in smooth Egyptian linen and the shaded timber deck has a comfortable day bed for afternoon siestas. The open air splash tub and shower in the ensuite bathroom are perfectly positioned for watching passing elephants as you bathe and both electric lighting and hot and cold water are on tap 24/7.
The game-viewing at Old Mondoro is spectacular, so close to nature that much of it, including the elephants, can be viewed from your deck, but the incredibly varied bush walks, 4×4 safaris, night drives and canoe trips with the knowledgeable guides reveal so much more. This is a prime spot for leopard sightings, often so elusive, and all sorts of game and bird-life both on the river, the plains and in the forest areas. Lucky guests occasionally even get to see the extremely rare pangolin.
Excellent food and wine prepared in the traditional bush kitchen and served in the canvas roofed dining area overlooking the river, add the final touch to a wonderfully relaxed and entertaining bush experience, so that you really feel that this special corner of Africa is home.
