Africa is known first and foremost for safari. Vast wilderness areas, extraordinary wildlife encounters, and some of the finest private game reserves in the world. What many travellers don’t immediately realise is that the continent also offers some of the most spectacular tropical beach destinations anywhere.

Pair the two together, and you have one of southern Africa’s most rewarding journeys: a Beach and Bush safari –wildlife-rich landscapes followed by time on warm Indian Ocean shores.

Southern Destinations consultant Camille Rowe recently travelled this route herself, combining a stay at Serondella in the Thornybush Game Reserve with time at Santorini Mozambique. Experiencing both in one trip offers a striking contrast –from the rhythm of safari life to the relaxed elegance of a private coastal retreat.

Serondella – Thornybush Game Reserve

Serondella means “place of elephants,” and the name feels fitting as soon as you arrive.

I immediately felt like I was coming home. It’s a small boutique lodge with just seven suites, which makes the atmosphere incredibly relaxed and personal. The main lodge area includes a bar and dining space that opens onto a deck and rim-flow pool, overlooking a very active waterhole. Animals often come down for a drink while you’re simply sitting with a coffee or cocktail – a reminder that here in Thornybush, you’re firmly in their world.

The suites are beautifully designed and thoughtfully appointed.

Madolo and Timaka are the one-bedroom suites, each with a private plunge pool and excellent views over the waterhole. Inside, there’s a small lounge area, desk, minibar, and Nespresso machine — everything you need for a relaxed and comfortable stay.

For families, there are two excellent options:

Botsotso is a two-bedroom family unit with the bedrooms linked by a shared lounge and kitchenette. The plunge pool is shared between the rooms, and there’s a lovely outdoor bath beside one of the bedrooms.

For those travelling together as a family or small group, Willem’s Den is a standout. The three-bedroom private villa includes its own lounge area, kitchenette, heated plunge pool, and private boma for dinners under the stars. It’s an ideal option if you value privacy and time together, particularly for multi-generational families planning a safari where everyone can share the experience without sacrificing space.

One of the highlights of my stay was the guiding team. What stood out for me was how much knowledge the tracker shared with guests throughout the experience. You quickly realise that a private game lodge isn’t only about sightings – it’s about understanding the landscape, animal behaviour, and the small details that bring the bush to life. That level of insight is exactly what makes staying in a lodge like Serondella so worthwhile.

Between game drives, there’s plenty to enjoy back at the lodge. I made use of the very well-equipped gym, which helped offset the exceptional food coming out of the kitchen. Meals are beautifully prepared and varied, and long lunches or relaxed dinners become part of the daily rhythm. There’s also a spa if you’d rather spend the afternoon unwinding.

Serondella manages to feel both refined and relaxed –a lodge where the focus is firmly on the wildlife experience, but where the hospitality and attention to detail make the stay memorable.

Santorini Mozambique – Indian Ocean Escape

From the bush, the journey shifts dramatically – from wildlife-rich savannah to the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean.

Santorini in Mozambique is a favourite among the Southern Destinations team, and after visiting it myself, I completely understand why. It’s a place where the people define the atmosphere. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, you’re surrounded by warmth, friendliness, and a genuine sense of hospitality.

The property offers several different accommodation options, each suited to a different type of traveller.

The Main Villa features five suites positioned across different levels, all with beautiful ocean views. What I particularly like about staying here is the variety of shared spaces – there are multiple places to dine or relax, so you can be as social or as private as you like.

For couples, Villa Na Carolina is a wonderful option, offering privacy and. The Chapel, a two-bedroom villa, is another lovely space and works well for couples travelling together.

Santorini is also particularly popular with honeymooners, and it’s easy to see why. The setting feels intimate and peaceful, with many private corners around the property for relaxed dinners, quiet mornings, or sunset drinks overlooking the ocean.

During my stay, I was based in Villa da Praia, a four-bedroom villa that is perfect for families or groups. It includes a spacious lounge, dining area, outdoor patio for entertaining, and a private pool. It’s a wonderfully relaxed space to spend time together, and I enjoyed it so much that I’m actually returning with my entire family later this year.

Food is a major highlight at Santorini. The kitchen follows a farm-to-table philosophy, incorporating fresh ingredients from their own vegetable garden along with flavours from Mozambican cuisine. One of the most memorable meals of the trip was lunch served in the garden itself, surrounded by the produce that had just been harvested.

Because my stay was short, I only managed one activity – but it was a special one. We headed out to a nearby island for a private picnic lunch, with the option to snorkel in the surrounding waters. Standing on that long stretch of untouched beach with not another person around is one of those travel moments you don’t forget.

On the way home, I even met a honeymoon couple at the airport who had also stayed at Santorini. We started chatting about our experiences, and they said exactly what I had been thinking — the place is beautiful, but the people are what make it truly memorable.

Why a Beach & Bush Safari Works So Well

A Beach and Bush safari offers two very different but complementary experiences.

Safari days are full – early morning game drives, wildlife sightings, long lunches, and evenings around the fire. Arriving on the coast brings a welcome shift in pace: open ocean views, warm water, relaxed meals, and time simply to slow down.

This kind of itinerary works particularly well for couples, honeymooners, and families. Honeymoon couples enjoy the transition from adventure to quiet privacy, while families appreciate the balance between shared safari moments and relaxed beach time together.

From elephants gathering at a Thornybush waterhole to a private island picnic in Mozambique, the journey highlights two remarkable sides of southern Africa – the wild interior and the Indian Ocean coast.

It’s a combination that’s hard to beat.
